Creating a mood }{ Texture Tuesdays

Do you know one of the reasons I love playing with textures? Because a photo can end up with so many different looks or moods, just with a change of layer mode, opacity, or combination of textures.

Today's Texture Tuesdays challenge was wide open. I chose this recent picture of a flower and tried to create a soft, ethereal feeling.

Adjustments:

  • levels, color curves, and unsharp mask
  • layer 1: Kim Klassen's "beautiful" on lighter color @ 25%
  • layer 2: Kim Klassen's "sweettart" on hue @ 30%
  • layer 3: gradient fill on screen @ 20%

Here's the original for comparison:

I also wanted to try adding a grungier look with the textures, but flowers weren't working for me. So I dug up this photo from last year. It's just the side of a old service tractor I found at a park, but I liked the character of the old metal.

What types of looks do you like on your pictures - retro, vintage romantic, polaroid, grunge, soft, hazy?

  8. I am not quite sure what my style is yet, but I love the challenge of finding the right subject for the texture. Love what you have done with both the flower and the 7.

  9. I completely understand. It is hard to make a beautiful tulip look grungy. Beautiful. V

  12. Great work on the texture! :)

I generally prefer the "clean & simple" look, but I do play around with different styles. Sometimes certain things work for some photos and it's nice to spice things up a bit once in a while!

  13. Textures are so much fun and you´ve used it really well! :-) I have so much to learn there, sometimes I get it like I want and sometimes NOT..! :-)

I like the vintage look right now, but also the crisp and colorful works really well depending on the photos. :-)

    Have a great day!

  21. Beautiful, both photos, and as you said, very different in mood. Your soft flowerphoto is stunning! I love the grungy dramatic look myself, some how the softer look never works for me. I love doing portraits and landscapes, and both of them usually end up grungy and dramatic ;-)

  23. great contrast between the focal flower and the background. Recently all my texture work has been towards the aged and grumge look - and with vintage as the challenge next week I guess that will continue !

  24. i like several looks, i love the really hard edgy grungy looks especially on old buildings rusted and worn and i like the really ethereal soft and wispy look as well i guess it depends on the shot itself. i love the tractor shot
